Alec Fairey
I first saw Alec in the Arizona Rep's production of King Lear, in which he was part of the mass of soldiers who seemed to constantly be running around the set, dodging bullets and tear gas (they did the show set during World War I). Later one he played Duncan to my Macbeth in Horror Unpspeakable's production of Macbeth. He was perfect as Duncan- friendly and just a touch dumb. That spring I finally got a chance to work directly with him when he joined the cast of The Odyssey, in which, like the majority of the company, he played a number of roles, most notably Alcinous, the king of Scheria (which was a nice Duncan re-hash) and Polyphemus, the Cyclops, which in our production was symbolized by a half-naked Alec in a fur cape holding a cantaloupe out before him like a long, tentacled eye. Believe it or not, Alec took this very silly concept and totally made it work, using his bellowing voice to cow the other actors while playing up the melon trick for all it was worth. Ultimately we ended up giving Wylie Herman, who played Ram, his assistant Cyclops, an apple, just to keep it all consistent. Perhaps the funniest moment in the whole second act came when they two of them, in awe over Odysseus' ability to wink, put their two pieces of fruit together in order to "look closer". The audience got it every night. The moral of the story? Never act opposite children, animals, or fruit. The fruit wins every time.
