Brenden Kearney
At the time that she was in my production of The Odyssey, Namoli Brennet went by the name Brenden Kearney, and though she may tell you that she only gets better every year, I don't know that I'll ever love any of her music as much as the score she wrote for us and performed each night, live, as Billy Blue, the narrator in Walcott's rendering of Homer's epic poem. At the time of our show, Brenden was a Tucson based singer/songwriter, had released one CD, and was finding work as a choir director to fill in between coffee shop gigs and night club concerts. Appearing almost out of nowhere, he whipped out ten songs and a fair amount of incidental music in about four weeks, then put in six excellent nights of playing, bringing our story to life and successfully making his acting debut at the same time. He has since gone on to evolve into the glamorous and much critically praised rock/folk artist, Namoli Brennet, and continues to put out CDs and tour, occasionally stopping in San Francisco, where I try to catch her every time. I own a fair number of her albums at this point, but my favorite remains the one she burned us of her Odyssey creations, and I think fellow cast-member Courtney Wilkerson summed it up best when she said, "This will always be the music of this moment in our lives."
