Claire Ann Rice

A transplant from New Mexico, Claire came to us through Warden, Stacy and Cassie, who had all acted under her direction as part of Thunderbird Theater Company’s show, Serve By Expiration, which preceded, by only a few weeks, No Nude Men’s one act collection, Cerberus Barking, thus making Claire a natural fit when we were on the search for a fourth woman to round out the company. Claire came on to play all the characters who screamed, first the crazy (but kind of sad) Queen in Hilde Susan Jaegntes’s play, Spoon Justice and then in the roles of the unimpressed Cockney Driver and nasty, evil Mabel, the Octopus Woman, in my play, Polyxena In Orbit. A delightful and stately presence all around, she’s in reality a really nice person with a great deal of experience and insight, having earned her BA in Performance in New Mexico in 2003 and graduated in May 2006 with her MFA in Playwrighting from SFSU where she works as staff and a lecturer. She did some marvelous things with the Queen in particular, and when I praised Wylie for his direction of her character’s climactic monologue, he completely deferred to her, saying, “It’s all Claire.” While I’m sure he’s being modest, it’s still a testimony to everything she brings as an actress, though to be honest, what won me over at her audition was a refernce to The Last Unicorn, which says everything about Claire as a person, and that almost counts for more in my book
